SCAN 315 Nordic Cinema
This course will introduce students to contemporary cinema in a Nordic context. We will look at films from Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, and Finland, in order to gain a sense of how the institutions, conflicts, and changes that have comprised Nordic national cinemas are both reinforced and interrogated in Nordic films from the last thirty years. In addition to studying the visual styles, narrative strategies, and major themes in these films, we will pay particular attention to how these films represent gender, sexuality, race, and class. Students will learn the basics of film analysis, as well as how to analyze constructions of identity within the context of Nordic film. Secondary literature will include readings from film theory, queer and feminist theory, and critical race studies.
